Pre-form 1

A limited understanding of English and Kiswahili is a major cause of low performance in Primary School exit exams, results that prevent the students to obtain a place on a government secondary school. With no means to pay for a private secondary, many students education journey ends here.

Aditionally, the transition from primary to secondary school is a particularly vulnerable time for children to drop out of school. Some due to parents not believing in higher education or due to their financial situations. For girls, the reasons lie in being forced to marry or early pregnancy.

In its majority, those placed in a goverment school, still struggle from the beginning and fall behind fast, also causing drop outs.

At Emanyata we offer a 3 month transition class from October to December each year called Pre-Form I. This program provides a broad introduction to life at a boarding school, introduces students to all subjects they will encounter and perhaps most critically, it provides an intensive focus on spoken and written language, particularly English and on establishing basic numeracy skills.

Girls and boys equally become confident in their potential to succeed at secondary school and are much more prepared to start the new school year in January. These students often become informal mentors to those that did not get the extra boost of learning during the transition period.

We highly recommend Pre-Form I for all pastoralist students, whether your child is selected to attend a government secondary school or plans to stay with us at Emanyata.
