About Us
Our Inspiration
Founded in 1992 by pastoralist activist Moringe Parkipuny, the first Maasai Member of Parliament for Ngorongoro District, Emanyata Secondary School was established as a mixed gender boarding school built by the community for the pastoralists.
Currently, Emanyata is managed by Pastoral Women’s Council on behalf of the Aigwanak Trust, a collective of community traditional leaders. This deep-rooted community ownership ensures that Emanyata reflects the values, aspirations, and identity of the people it serves, the pastoralists communities.
Our School
Located on the outskirts of Ololosokwan Village, in Ngorongoro District, Emanyata Secondary School offers NECTA (National Examinations Council of Tanzania) approved secondary education to pastoralist youth from across the region. Emanyata is a mixed-gender, english taught boarding school with the capacity to accommodate up to 400 students.
We teach from Form I to Form IV and also have a 3 month Pre-Form 1 programme that runs from October to December each year. Pre-Form 1 is designed to help students transition into secondary school by introducing them to key subjects they will go on to study. It is especially valuable for students coming from Swahili-medium primary schools, as it gives them an early foundation in English, which becomes the language of instruction in secondary education. Pre-Form 1 also plays a vital protective role, offering a safe environment for girls who might otherwise be at risk during the school break.
Our Goal
At Emanyata, our mission is to ensure academic excellence while staying deeply rooted with the values of our pastoralist community, being a school that not only uplifts our students but also reflects and promotes the traditions and aspirations of the people we serve. We strive to become a financially self-sustaining model for community education and we are committed to making education accessible to academically able but vulnerable girls by offering donor-funded scholarships and bursaries.
We aim to transform our society by embracing our culture and providing a holistic and modern education while keeping our students free from oppression and distraction. Our academic programmes and after school activities reflect our core values of transformation, self reliance and community. We believe every child deserves a chance through study and inspiration to transform their life, image new possibilities and achieve their dreams. Many Emanyata graduates have gone on to become ambassadors for education, equality and active citizenship becoming leaders in their own right and shaping the future of their communities and beyond.
Our Approach
At Emanyata, we use a holistic and learner centred approach to bridge the academic and aspirational gap between rural students and their urban peers. Our curriculum is taught entirely in English, unlike most Tanzanian schools which are Swahili medium. This gives our students a competitive edge and improves their future prospects at a national and international level.
Our academic programmes and after school activities reflect our core values of transformation, self-reliance and community. Emanyata students develop their critical thinking skills and gain nationally recognized qualifications to become aspiring, confident and self reliant global citizens. As their opportunities grow, so does the social and economic well-being of their families, being able to contribute to the sustainable development of their community.
Emanyata works in partnership with parents, students, teachers, the School Board of Directors, donors, volunteers and other stakeholders.
